What is a Doula?

The word doula is an ancient Greek word meaning 'woman servant'. The concept of having a doula is relatively new in Australia, but is very common in other countries such as the United Kingdom and America.

A doula provides emotional, physical and educational support to a woman and her partner throughout pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period. Research shows that the assistance of a doula at birth decreases the length of labour and reduces the need for drugs and medical intervention.

A doula will use many techniques to encourage the labour process, including massage, relaxation, breathing, visualisation and positioning. She assists the couple to research their options for labour and to make an informed decision by providing resources and information in the form of books, articles, DVD's, recommended courses and useful links.

A doula will build a relationship with the couple during pregnancy and assist them to develop their ideal birth by building a birth plan. The doula nurtures and encourages the woman and supports her to achieve the best birthing experience for her. She will also act as a liaison between the birthing couple and the hospital staff. A doula supports the woman's birth ideal and does not impose her own opinions or views on the birthing process. She will also help the partner to take an active role in supporting the woman throughout her pregnancy and birth.
